From August 4th to 6th, 2025, the communities of Butura Kampani and Maiyanga (Bokkos LGA, Plateau State) came together for a tree-planting campaign under the GEF/SGP (UNDP) Project: Strengthening the Capacity of Small-Scale Farmers in Agroecological Techniques, implemented by RURCON.
The campaign was flagged off with the distribution of 3,000 avocado seedlings to 400 households a significant step toward improving food security, restoring degraded lands, and promoting climate resilience.
Key leaders joined hands with the community to make this vision a reality. Mr. Samuel Dapiya, Director General of PEPSA who was a special guest, urged the people to see tree planting as “an investment in our children’s tomorrow,” before planting the first avocado seedling. Saf Mandar, the Ward Head of Butura Kampani, echoed his words, saying: “These trees will stand as guardians of our land, protecting the soil and sustaining our livelihoods.”
Mr. Samuel Dapiya, Director General of PEPSA, Saf Mandar, Ward Head of Maiyanga, and the Executive Director of RURCON, each planted an avocado seedling to symbolize their commitment.
In a moving moment, the Executive Director of RURCON emphasizing that: “Every tree we plant today strengthens the capacity of small-scale farmers, equips them with agroecological techniques, and secures a sustainable future for our communities.”
This initiative is more than an environmental action—it is a capacity-building effort that empowers small-scale farmers with agroecological techniques, creates alternative livelihoods, and reduces dependence on unsustainable practices.
The avocado trees planted today will, in the years to come, provide shade, fruit, and income, ensuring that communities are not only greener but also more sustainable and resilient. RURCON is proud to walk alongside these communities as they take ownership of their environment and future.
